WM2 legislation update: EA address consultation

In January 2014, new legislation was introduced regarding the classification of packaging waste that contained hazardous substances. The legislation has undergone scrutiny and even now in April after the proposed enforcement date, the uncertainty still continues.

The legislation, which had an enforcement date of the 1st April 2014, has caused a stir in the packaging and hazardous products industries as many believe the consultation didn’t give enough time to review the contents to make sure the updates were practical and realistic.

The Environmental Agency (EA) held a meeting on the 27th March to review the concerns raised during the consultation. Some questions were answered regarding reusable packaging but this created further confusion as to which businesses could accept specific types of reusable packaging and how the packaging should be classified.

In conjunction with NEPIC, RPS had arranged a seminar for the 27th March to inform industry peers of the changes but as the EA meeting was scheduled for the same day it was decided to postpone the event until the legislation is fully validated.

RPS will keep you up to date with the legislation changes and will let you know when the revised seminar will take place. It will be a good opportunity to come along to ensure your business is complying with the latest updates and meet like-minded companies.
