Could the history of pallets of the past help us shape our future?

The good old wooden pallet has been helping your business and many others for decades, but do you really know your pallet history and more importantly, can we use what we know about the past to reshape the future?

Wooden packaging is used to transport produce across the world in the form of wooden crates, barrels, kegs and boxes. The forerunner is the wooden pallet, a packaging commodity used increasingly during the 20th century. With usage dating back to before World War 2 – the modern wooden pallet was born in 1925 - pallets have had a substantial influence in the way our products have been handled, stored and transported.

With an ever changing society, rapidly developing businesses and the way in which we use our products constantly changing, the EU’s approach to waste management also continually evolves and has done so since the 1990s.

Twenty years ago, not much was done in the way of reusing or recycling existing packaging but towards the end of the decade - and especially in the early 2000s when RPS was formed - reuse was becoming more relevant and increasingly more important to companies.

Now, the waste hierarchy is pushing reuse over recycling and energy recovery. The EU’s approach to waste management refers to five steps in article 4 of the Waste Framework Directive:

  • Prevention
  • Reuse and preparation for reuse
  • Recycle
  • Recovery
  • Disposal
Now we have taken you on a brief but concise history of the pallet, what does its future look like?

We at RPS want to help change the way your business thinks and aid you to become a forward thinking business, thinking reuse first before recycling.

Our planet’s raw materials are essential to ensure the safe and fast transportation of goods and this is where RPS is ready to lead the way to help your business think economically, because we believe reuse is the future.

Work with us and we will…

  • Collect your used pallets
  • Repair the pallets
  • Return the reconditioned pallets to you ready for reuse
