It’s back! Cyclists from across the region are gearing up for the 20th annual Stokesley Charity Bike Ride, which will take place on Sunday 14th May, and we’re hoping it will be a record breaker!

We’re delighted to be once again sponsoring the event for the fourth year in a row.

Last year, 326 riders took on the demanding but beautiful ride around picturesque Stokesley and the surrounding area and thanks to their amazing efforts, they raised an astounding £10,055!

With the support of the local community, including several riders who have ridden in all 19 previous races, the money raised was used to pay for a variety of care and equipment in the region.

Charities that have benefited can be seen on the 2017 race t-shirt, a copy of which is shown below.

Over the last 19 years, the charity has raised £131,000 for numerous organisations including Macmillan Cancer Support, Herriot Hospice Homecare and Bloodwise. This year cyclists will raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in support of a much-loved member of the community, Jack Iveson, who has received treatment locally for cancer.

Make-A-Wish is a UK-based charity, which grants magical wishes to enrich the lives of children and young people fighting life-threatening conditions. Whether it’s starring in their own films, walking with dinosaurs, going on an amazing holiday, meeting a celebrity hero, the organisation goes above and beyond to help very special children.

The annual bike ride has been a tradition since 1998 and has thrived ever since. The first event came about after event organiser, Paul Mackintosh, volunteered to do a bike ride for a two-and-a-half-year-old girl, Chloe Brown, who was suffering from a very rare form of cancer.

The rest is history, with Paul’s dedication to the event still clear to see in the organisation of the 20th race. Chloe, now aged 21, will ride the full 30 mile race this year. Her family, including her grandparents and aunty, Des, Hazel and Yvonne Brown, work hard to make sure the event runs every year.

What makes this particular event special is that it isn’t just about raising money. The dedication of each person involved is wonderful! Everyone comes together because they want to help raise awareness of the brilliant work the nominated charities do and they want to give something back to the local community.
