On Monday 5th May RPS director Tim Hutchinson was a key speaker at the 8th World FIBC Congress & Exhibition 2014. The congress, which this year took place at the Moevenpick Hotel, Amsterdam, was intended to present its most impressive and in-depth programme to date and with Tim discussing the possibilities of FIBC big bag reuse the content was definitely up to speed with EU directives.

The event which is sponsored by MCI Media Ltd set out two days of discussions regarding the use of FIBCs and various related topics such as technological developments and good use of FIBC manufacturing materials. RPS director Tim Hutchinson gave a 30 minute presentation on the benefits of big bag cleaning and reuse, helping to educate the congress about the potential cost savings for customers and promote increased sustainability opportunities.

Part of Tim's speech covered the latest Green Paper published by the EU Commission that states that waste is a grave global problem. The discussion thereafter focused on how waste streams should be improved and effective waste management systems should be adopted to eliminate these global problems. In the latest UK Budget landfill tax increased to £80 per tonne so it is clear that waste not only causes a problem in respect of the global volumes generated, the associated costs are rising and set to climb even further. From a sustainability point of view and to engage in a circular economy it is now even more important to adopt the EU Waste Hierarchy into businesses to preserve resources and build a less wasteful future.

The objective of Tim's speech at the FIBC Congress was to make big bag manufacturers and users aware that reconditioning and reusing an FIBC means the bag will not be disposed of irresponsibly. This can save the environment and also reduce disposal costs. Many FIBCs are only purposefully manufactured for single trip use but to preserve the commodity used to manufacture the bags, could we create fit for purpose big bags that can perform multiple trips?
