Charity benefits from the Circular Economy

The concept

There are currently in excess of 45 million printer cartridges going into UK landfill every year. Of this amount under 20% is recycled or reused. Considering the cartridges and toners are refillable and can be reused it seems shocking that less than a fifth is currently going down this route.

Integrated Office Systems (IOS) Ltd, based in Thornaby, decided it was about time it made it easier for its customers to do something about the empty cartridges and toners to help encourage waste reduction.

How IOS Ltd do it

IOS Ltd collect all of the empty cartridges from customers which are in turn collected by the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) Trading Company. As the majority of cartridges and toners have a resale value, the GNAAS Trading Company then converts the waste cartridges and toners into money.

The GNAAS Trading Company donates 100% of the profits made back into GNAAS saving energy, the environment and raising worthy charitable funds. The service not only encourages sustainability, it helps to keep the aircraft flying making remote rescues attempts possible.

To further encourage sustainability IOS Ltd only collect from their customers when they are due to deliver goods. This helps to further reduce carbon footprints and promote sustainability, key characteristics of a circular economy.

RPS takes part in the initiative which both helps reduce waste but more importantly raises awareness and money for the Great North Air Ambulance Service, a vital link in the North East, Cumbria and North Yorkshire.
