Waste Framework Directive Review

Legislation April 11, 2010 10:06 am

DEFRA have reviewed the Waste Framework Directive and wish to implement a number of changes which must become law by 12th December 2010. Under the revised Directive the five point ‘waste hierarchy’ which prioritises prevention and re-use over recycling and disposal will become law; setting the priority of future waste management policy and legislation will minimise waste. This also supports operations already in place for the collection of waste materials in the domestic sector. Additionally the new law will enforce waste management companies to provide facilities for the segregation of materials for Commercial and Industrial by 2015, and fines could be expected for those not offering separate waste collections. The consultation has been welcomed by the Environment Services Association and they will work with the Government to ensure the Directive is implemented in a timely and transparent way.
