Sustainability in the face of adversity

Latest News May 2, 2018 9:49 am

Everywhere we turn these days, there’s talk of sustainability and how each choice we make affects the world around us.

At RPS, we’re encouraged by the media regarding everyday items and how the government is inspiring us all to make more ethical choices when it comes to the products we use.

But what does that mean for the wooden packaging industry?

According to the Pöyry Index, the price of pallet timber has increased by a massive 14.8% in just six months. The issues at sawmills, due to wet weather and soaring log prices, means that timber supplies are low and ultimately, those requiring timber for business are paying the price.

This increase in price shows no sign of slowing in the near future. However, far from disheartening our team, it has confirmed all that we do and believe in. RPS takes the hassle out of pallets, providing our customers with sustainable pallet solutions that helps save money in the process.

We know that discarding a new, timber pallet that will only be used once not only impacts our environment, it is also more costly and it is not sustainable.

How can we help?

RPS handles many thousands of reconditioned wooden pallets that can stand the test of time and be used for multiple trips. When they’re past their best we can recycle older pallets, applying the waste hierarchy to help preserve the materials and prevent waste.

To ensure our reconditioned pallets are of the best quality, they undergo the rigorous inspection to make sure that they meet the same high standards as a brand-new pallet.

We know that in a circular economy, the ultimate goal is to keep products circulating to a high standard for as long as possible and maximise resources.

That’s why RPS encourages reuse where we can, and when reuse is no longer an option we also have recycling and energy recovery outlets, where scrap wood can be used for other purposes.

RPS is proud to acknowledge that all scrap pallets and wood waste is fully tracked and does not end up in landfill. The wood waste is either processed into woodchip for use as biomass fuel or recycled into products such as animal bedding.

What does this mean for your business?

In broad terms RPS could save your company up to 50% compared to the purchase of new packaging.

Our aim is to make the process simple, effective and rewarding. Our expertise in customer service, effective logistics and operational excellence will ensure our pallet recovery for reuse service is implemented seamlessly and effortlessly.

Let us take the hassle out of pallets.
